It was most enlightening to join various members of the research community at Frankston Hospital yesterday for the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA) Showcase event. In attendance from Atticus was Floyd Gomes, CEO and Hilde Aschehoug, State Home Care Manager, Mark & Sylvie's Home Care.

It was great to learn about the various important research projects occurring. What came through was the commitment to translating that research into practice by cultivating partnerships with industry. Throughout the day also was a focus on codesign of services. This is a challenging and emerging space. It presents the promise of developing services more relevant and able to achieve person centred outcomes. Yet, it could fall victim to tokenism, "codesign washing" with a degree of populsim. We look forward to traversing this territory with an open mind, and ultimately being involved with purposeful innovation improving tomorrow.

Some highlights of the event included hearing Patricia Sparrow, CEO COTA (Council on The Ageing) speak about ageism. One issue that resonated is the language we use about an Australia destined to have an increased proportion of older people. Previously described as the "tsunami" of older people and other references to disaster. Is it a disaster? We don't have to see it like this. We don't have to scaremonger. Rather, we need to recognise the contribution of the Baby Boomers to propelling Australia forward over many decades and now create ways to respectfully incorporate their retirement into a healthy, prosperous, future Australia.

Also of particular interest was the Beyond 50 study results presented by Dr Tina Lam, Senior Research Fellow Monash Addiction Research Centre (Monash University) and Kathleen van der Weerden from Mornington Peninsula Shire. This brought to light the issue of increasing alcohol consumption within an older population. Significant loneliness - a key point. In our efforts, including through creating Radio Western Port (www.radiowesternport.org), hopefully Atticus can be helpful.

From the standpoint of Atticus, per our motto "Driven by Soul" and our values of Teamwork, Creativity and Kindness, we appreciate the distinct role of research to challenge assumptions and spur continual improvement. From a front line perspective, integrating health and social care services, we emphasise that any system seeking to incorporate and translate research findings, must embed high levels of trust between actors. If end user trust is lacking, all is lost.

Finally, it was great to meet up and talk with Velandai Srikanth, Director National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA). Atticus was very grateful for being invited and looks forward to staying involved. On this note, thank you to Quinn Pawson CEO South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network for keeping us in the loop.

With reason to believe in a bright future ahead for Australia.
With exciting work to do yet 😊

Lovely when it IS actually operating and no track issues otherwise it’s a bus that goes in a circuitous route.
